5-Step CMM Buyer's Total Cost Audit (Zeiss Eclipse & Primo Star)

This checklist is for the person who needs to compare those quotes beyond the base price. I use it when I audit equipment purchases for our quality department. It takes about 20 minutes to run through.

Step 1: Map the Full Delivery Timeline

Step 4: Compare After-Sales Support Contracts
What to do: Get pricing for annual maintenance, emergency callouts, and software updates.
A Zeiss Eclipse CMM without a support contract is a risk. Typical annual plans run 10–15% of purchase price. But the real cost difference shows up in response time guarantees:
- Basic: 5 business days — $0–$1,500/year
- Premium: next business day — $2,500–$5,000/year
- Critical: 4-hour response — $6,000+/year
If your production line can't afford 5 days of downtime, the premium contract is cheaper in the long run.
Step 5: Run the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Calculator
What to do: Add up all costs over 3 years: base price + setup + integration + potential rework + support + shipping.
Here's a simple formula I use:
TCO = Base Price + Setup/Installation + (Annual Support × 3) + Rework Buffer + Shipping
For a Zeiss Primo Star microscope quoted at $4,500, the TCO might look like:
- Base: $4,500
- Setup and calibration: $900
- 3-year support: $1,500
- Rework buffer (5% chance of drift): $225
- Shipping: $200
- Total: $7,325
The $4,500 quote is misleading. The $7,325 figure is what you're actually committing to.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don't assume all quotes include calibration certificates. A Zeiss Eclipse CMM without certified calibration is essentially a doorstop. Verify before signing.
Don't ignore software update costs. Some vendors lock you into annual subscriptions after the first year. Ask explicitly.
