Zeiss Microscopes, Magnehelic Gauges, and Fluke 179: What a Procurement Manager Checks Before Buying
I'm the procurement manager at a 38-person calibration and testing lab. I've managed our instrument budget—roughly $240,000 a year—for the past 7 years, and every purchase order goes into the same cost tracking spreadsheet. Fluke 179 Multimeter and Which Fluke Multimeter Should You Buy
If you've been searching for “multimeter 179,” you're probably looking at the Fluke 179. It's a workhorse. True RMS, temperature input, capacitance, and 0.09% basic DC accuracy in a CAT IV/III body. If you're an electrician, technician, or lab person who works on panels and motors, it's a strong middle choice.
But “which Fluke multimeter should I buy” doesn't have a one-size-fits-all answer. Here's the scenario split I use with our own team:
- If you're mostly troubleshooting HVAC, PLCs, and general industrial equipment, the Fluke 179 is probably the most balanced choice.
- If you're on live electrical gear every day and need the fastest response and highest peak capture, the Fluke 87V is worth the extra cost.
- If you're an electrician doing primarily residential and commercial callouts, the Fluke 117 is lighter, has non-contact voltage detection, and covers most daily work.
What about the no-name “$40 multimeter”? Let me be honest: it can be the correct TCO if you only need continuity and battery checks once a month, and you're willing to accept that it won't survive a drop. I do not mean everyone needs a $500 meter. But a multimeter is also safety equipment. When you're measuring on a live panel, category ratings are not a feature; they're the difference between a spark and an arc flash.
So my answer to “which Fluke multimeter should I buy” is: look at your actual work. The 179 is the best all-rounder for a maintenance shop. The 87V is for motor drive troubleshooting. The 117 is for electricians who want a compact one-handed meter. And if you choose a non-Fluke meter, at least verify that it carries a recognized CAT rating, and factor in replacement frequency.
The TCO That Changed My Mind
