Why the 'Expensive' Zeiss CMM Quote Was Actually the Cheapest One

  • Installation and training: Zeiss quotes often include a standard installation and one training session. That’s not universal across vendors.
  • Calibration and service: a one-year service agreement or initial calibration might be in the base quote—or it might be added after I ask for it.

As of March 2025, based on the dealer quotes we reviewed, an entry-level Zeiss CMM is commonly priced in the six-figure range. Don’t take that as an official number—you need to get your own quote. Check current pricing with your local Zeiss representative. The point is that the number in the “base price” column tells you almost nothing. The point is what’s standing next to that number.

Then the Proximity Sensor Failed

The CMM arrived in late May. Installation was going smoothly until the probe head started doing something weird on the fifth axis: it would approach a part, then reverse before touching the surface. The error log said position alarm, but nothing was physically colliding. Our technician suspected the proximity sensor in the head had drifted out of tolerance.

  2. What’s the total cost after the accessories and software that I actually need?
  3. What happens if a component like a proximity sensor fails during the first year?
  4. Who pays for installation and training delays?

If a vendor can’t answer those questions in one conversation, I probably should not do business with them. The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—earns trust. And trust, as it turns out, is the cheapest thing you can buy.

What I’d Tell My 2022 Self

If I could go back to the beginning of this project, I would tell myself one thing: don’t be seduced by a low base number. It’s not the price. It’s just the opening bid.

The $22,000 mistake wasn’t caused by bad equipment. It was caused by my assumption that “same specifications” meant the same result across vendors. I’ve now made it a rule to map every quote side by side, line by line, before I open a PO. I’m not saying the cheapest quote is always a trap. But the quote that hides the costs is never transparent.

So if you’re in the middle of a buying decision right now—whether it’s a Zeiss microscope, a CMM, or even something as small as a sensor—take the time to read the whole quote. Ask what’s not included. Then ask again.

It might feel awkward. It might seem like you’re questioning the vendor’s integrity. But it’s a lot less awkward than explaining to your plant manager why a project cost twenty-two thousand dollars more than you approved.
