Does this mean Starrett calipers are bad? Not at all. They're excellent tools, and in a standalone context—say, a single machinist's workbench—they're a great choice. But "good in isolation" isn't the same as "good for your entire operation." The best caliper for your workflow is the one that reduces your total cost, not just the one with the lower sticker price.
Calibration Is Part of the Total Cost
One more thing: calibration. A $50 caliper with fresh, traceable calibration is actually more reliable in practice than a premium model whose certificate lapsed six months ago. We now budget annually for calibration on every measurement instrument—including our Zeiss CMM accessories, which surprises people. I've watched teams buy premium tools and then defer calibration to save money. That's a TCO mistake that disguises itself as a "deferral" and reveals itself as an audit finding.
Where This Framework Has Limits
